9309GYN Laparoscopic Hysterectomy and Colpopexy with Polypropylene Strip

TITLE: Laparoscopic Hysterectomy and Colpopexy with Polypropylene Strip Introduction: Uterine prolapse is a disabling disease that causes impairment in quality of life. The laparoscopic approach is a valid solution for this disease. Materials and Methods: Within the last 3 years, 15 patients, median age 70 years (range, 62 to 78), have been treated in our department by using laparoscopic hysterectomy and fixation of the vagina to the sacral promontory with a polypropylene extraperitoneal strip. Three patients had a previous hysterectomy and presented with vaginal prolapse. We used 3 trocars and 30° optic. Results: All procedures were carried out with the laparoscopic technique, and no conversion to the open technique was necessary. We observed one complication consisting of adhesions between the polypropylene strip and right ureter resolved by ureter stinting. Median postoperative hospitalization was 2 days, and the results at follow-up were good. Conclusion: The postoperative quality of life, short hospitalization times, and the short recuperation time indicate that this technique is the gold standard for this disease. Patients with stress incontinence must undergo control for an adequate period after the operation. Abs# 9309GYN Authors: Mohammad Alkilani MD, Giuseppe Pavone MD, Elvira Puntorieri MD
